I Bought the Wrong Thing at Auction!

I Bought the Wrong Thing at Auction!

From the author

Recently, I was invited to a charity gala. It was a delightful evening where we all dressed up and enjoyed the good food and music.

In addition to the ticket price, the charity raises money with an elaborate array of items that are offered in a silent auction. Hundreds of interesting things and services can be bid on. Before dinner, everyone spends time browsing the many tables with valuable, donated items of every description. There were artworks, event tickets, professional services, elaborate travel packages, gift baskets, dinners, and signed sports memorabilia.

I was intrigued, but didn’t want to stretch my budget that night. I elected to make a straight donation and enjoy the rest of the evening.

The dinner with so many friends was wonderful. There were a few speakers representing the charity and their stories of need and appreciation touched every heart.

Then it was part two of the auction, live bidding. The auctioneer took the mike and his friendly style put everyone at ease.

He had us all pretend to bid $100 each, offered some fun quips and then it was time to bid for real.

We all had a sheet listing the few items that would be offered for a live bid. I was talking to my friend when the bidding started. Opps… time to pay attention. The first item was one of the less expensive trips. It was a nice destination that included luxury accommodations for four people and a lot of other extras thrown in. You had to supply you own airfare, but it wouldn’t be a big expense.

Bidding was slow, they started at $150. and they were asking for a bid of $200. There was a pause in the room. Well, sometimes it is hard to get auctions revved up so I jumped in for the $200.

What a sluggish start for this vacation package. I couldn’t understand why this great trip wasn’t eliciting a bigger response. I was hooked! The bids slowly increased and I stayed on top with a couple more bids until the trip was mine! That is until they announced the next item. It was the very trip I had just bid on. What tha?

The first live auction item, the one I just bought, was an unlisted, lesser item they used to set up more excitement in the room. I goofed big! What did I just buy??

At the end of the gala, I went to the claim window to collect what I had actually bid on. They brought out a very elaborate, framed photo of the great Olympic swimmer and all-time gold medal winner, Michael Phelps.

What to do? I took it home and the next morning I thought to contact the father of the 13 year old competitive swimmer, Jessica, that was featured in this newsletter recently. I texted her dad to see if she might be interested and the reply came right back, “Absolutely, hold it for now.”

Three weeks later her dad invited me to a celebratory dinner for his daughter. She recently set records for swimming and just received all straight A’s on her report card. Mom and Dad were very proud and they were looking for the perfect gift. The Phelps photo was apparently it.

Everything worked out. The parents generously covered my goof and I was invited to a very special dinner at their home. Her father made a lovely speech and then presented Jessica with the Michael Phelps commemorative.

Oh my… She was shocked! Phelps is Jessica’s idol and she was deeply touched at the gift. Really touched. She said it was a fantastic gift and that Michael Phelps is the Man! What happiness!

Being an Actor in a Play

Jessica had accomplished much and of course mom and dad wanted to reward her in an appropriate way. Maybe I was a puppet in their Manifesting play or it was just a coincidence, but the parents came up with the ideal item to gift their daughter.

They sought the perfect gift. They didn’t specify what it was other than perfect. As it turns out, it was hand-delivered to them effortlessly, magically.
